A couple of days ago, an Apple customer realized that some movies he’d purchased through the company’s media store were missing and no longer available for him to download.

So for no particular reason, tonight I decided to back up my Kindle books and remove the DRM from the files.

It was a pain to figure out how to do this on a MacBook Pro in 2018, without owning a physical Kindle device. I documented the necessary steps for those of you whose setup is similar to mine.

My laptop is running High Sierra (version 10.13.6) and I have a current version of the Mac Kindle app installed. If you have trouble carrying out one of the individual steps, a search engine will be able to turn up helpful resources.

1. Install the Kindle Mac App.
2. Open Kindle preferences.
3. Change the content folder to one that’s convenient for you. I put it in my Google Drive folder.
4. Download all the books that you want to back up. Instead of doing this manually in the Mac app, follow these steps:
   1. Go to Amazon.com and navigate to the section called Your Content and Devices.
   2. Select all.
   3. Click the “Deliver” button and then select your Mac app from the dropdown menu.
   4. Do something else while the files download. If you have a lot of books, it’ll take some time. I think it took an hour for my ~300 books.
   5. This process was buggy for me but it eventually worked. No guarantees — you may have to manually trigger the download process for each book.
5. Download Calibre.
6. Download the DeDRM plugin and follow these instructions.
7. Download the KFX Input plugin from Calibre’s native plugin menu.
8. In Calibre, click the little dropdown arrow next to the “Add books” button. Choose this option: “Add books from directories, including sub-directories (Multiple books per directory, assumes every e-book file is a different book).”
9. Wait for all the books to load.
10. You’ll have a bunch of nonsense .md files along with your actual books. My nonsense files all started with “CR!” so I stuck that in the search bar, selected all (ctrl + A), and deleted them. My guess is that you could filter by file format instead, if you prefer.
11. Select all the remaining books, again using ctrl + A.
12. Click the little dropdown arrow next to “Convert books” and choose the bulk option.
13. Fiddle with the .epub conversion settings if you want to (I didn’t) and then go ahead and convert the files.
14. Wait for that process to go through — for me it took ~45 minutes.

Aaand here’s where I stopped. A handful of the books didn’t convert properly — Calibre told me it was because of DRM issues (after all those plugins?!) but I’ll figure out what happened later.

I hope this was helpful. If you come up with a way to improve the process, please let me know! Honestly, I would love for someone to productize this whole rigmarole.

If you are going to use Amazon and Kindle ecosystem, it’s not difficult at all. The entire process should take no more than 10 minutes. In many cases, it’s even less.

Teams Meeting add-in and FindTime for Outlook

FindTime is an add-in for Outlook that helps users reach consensus on a meeting time across companies. Once the meeting invitees have provided their preferred times, FindTime sends out the meeting invite on the user's behalf. If the Online meeting option is selected in FindTime, FindTime will schedule a Skype for Business or Microsoft Teams meeting. (FindTime will use whichever has been set by your organization as the default online meeting channel.)

Note

If you saved a Skype for Business setting in your Findtime dashboard, FindTime will use that instead of Microsoft Teams. If you want to use Microsoft Teams, delete the Skype for Business setting in your dashboard.

Authentication requirements

The Teams Meeting add-in requires users to sign in to Teams using Modern Authentication. If users do not use this method to sign in, they'll still be able to use the Teams client, but will be unable to schedule Teams online meetings using the Outlook add-in. You can fix this by doing one of the following:

• If Modern Authentication is not configured for your organization, you should configure Modern Authentication.
• If Modern Authentication is configured, but they canceled out on the dialog box, you should instruct users to sign in again using multi-factor authentication.

Enable private meetings

Allow scheduling for private meetings must be enabled in the Microsoft Teams admin center for the add-in to get deployed. In the admin center, go to Meetings > Meeting Policies, and in the General section, toggle Allow scheduling private meetings to On.)

The Teams client installs the correct add-in by determining if users need the 32-bit or 64-bit version.

Users might need to restart Outlook after an installation or upgrade of Teams to get the latest add-in.​

Teams upgrade policy and the Teams Meeting add-in for Outlook

Customers can choose their upgrade journey from Skype for Business to Teams. Tenant admins can use the Teams co-existence mode to define this journey for their users. Tenant admins have the option to enable users to use Teams alongside Skype for Business (Islands mode).

When users who are in Island mode schedule a meeting in Outlook, they typically expect to be able to choose whether to schedule a Skype for Business or a Teams meeting. In Outlook on the web, Outlook Windows, and Outlook Mac, users see both Skype for Business and Teams add-ins when in Islands mode by default. You can configure a Teams meeting policy setting to control whether users in Islands mode can only use the Teams Meeting add-in or both the Teams Meeting and Skype for Business Meeting add-ins.

Don’t worry, everything is fine. Bluetooth serial adapters are rare enough that the wizard doesn’t have a case for what to display. Just click “Continue”. Step 5: Observe your handiwork You should now have a “BlueRadios” device in your device list. Select it and click “Edit Serial Ports…”. Step 6: Configuring Serial Ports As you can see, the serial port is already set up for you the way it should be. The only thing to add is to tick “Require pairing for security” since I think the BlueSMiRF modules may require it. [note: test this again] Now you have a working Bluetooth serial port. You can access it with any program that speaks to serial ports. One of the best GUI programs to do this is ZTerm. Step 7: Launch ZTerm and Pick your Port When launching ZTerm, hold down the Shift key so you can select a port. Select the port you saw in the previous step. It should be “BlueRadios-COM0-1”. Step 8: Configure ZTerm Set up ZTerm like above. 57600 bps, 8N1 is a good speed (and the speed the Roomba talks at, if you’re doing Roomba stuff). The “Local Echo” is so you can see what you type for the steps below, because the BlueSMiRF doesn’t echo back. The actual speed you set here doesn’t change the physical speed at the RX/TX wires of the BlueSMiRF. For that we need to go into command mode and change some of BlueSMiRF’s parameters. Step 9: Configure BlueSMiRF The BlueSMiRF should power up in “data mode”, that is, it’s like a virtual cable with nothing in between. You can command it however to change how it behaves. Just like an old AT-compatible mode, you enter command mode with “+++” and pressing Return. It should respond with “OK”. To verify, type “AT” and Return again, and it should again respond with “OK”. Now type “ATSW20,236,0,0,1”. This magic incantation changes the speed and other serial paraemters of the other ‘side’ of the BlueSMiRF (i.e. the RX/TX lines plugged into whatever, like a Roomba) to 57600 8N1. This needs to be done because by default, it comes up at something like 19200 bps. If you’d like the details on how to switch to other speeds and all the other magic parameters, either contact SparkFun or BlueRadios (the makers of BlueSMiRF’s heart) Step 10: Finishing up Put the BlueSMiRF back in data mode with “ATMD” and then you’re done. It should come back up in data mode automatically on powerup.
